Education in Venezuela
1. Public / Private
For children aged six through 15, education is compulsory and provided for free.
The public schools in Venezuela have suffered from the economic situation in recent years. Budget cutbacks, lack of materials and equipment, and strikes have made private schools increasingly popular among many Venezuelans of means, as well as foreign residents.
2. International schools
A number of international schools in Caracas, Maracaibo, and other cities offer the International Baccalaureate or the Secondary School Leaving Certificate. Instruction is available in English, French, German, Spanish, and Italian, and there are Protestant, Jewish, and Catholic institutions.
3. Registration
Registration is in the spring. To simplify the registration procedure, have a transcript from previous schools handy and ask the family physician to prepare a health report for each child detailing past immunizations and inoculations. Some schools may require that school certificates be notarized by a Venezuelan consulate at the place of origin.
4. Uniforms
Uniforms are standard throughout Venezuela and typically consist of dark blue pants (blue jeans are common) for boys and skirts or slacks of the same color for girls. Shirt color for both sexes depends on the grade level: white for elementary age, light blue for grades 6 through 8, and beige or tan for grades 9 through 12.
5. Nursery schools
Nursery schools are available and generally accept children from age three.
