Hello! This is Allied (Korea).
Are you planning a move to Thailand?
While moving abroad is an exciting adventure, it also requires meticulous preparation, and Thailand is known for its strict documentation and customs procedures. Today, we’ll guide you through the essential documents and customs procedures you need to know when moving to Thailand.
Essential Documents for Moving to Thailand
Here are the key documents you’ll need for a smooth relocation to Thailand. Without these, your customs clearance could be delayed, or you may incur additional costs, so make sure everything is ready in advance.
1. Original Passport and Copies
An original passport is mandatory for customs clearance.
If you cannot provide the original, a notarized copy can be used, but you will not be eligible for duty exemptions, and additional taxes may apply.
2. Thai Work Permit
A valid Thai work permit for at least one year (original or digital) is required.
Other visa types (e.g., retirement visas, Thai Elite Cards) do not qualify for duty-free exemptions.
3. Shipping Documents
Bill of Lading (BL) or Airway Bill (AWB) is needed.
Items must be listed as “Used Household Goods and Personal Effects” in the shipping documents.
4. Packing List
Prepare a detailed inventory of all items to ensure accurate customs clearance.
Customs Clearance Process in Thailand
Thailand’s customs process is stricter and more detail-oriented than in many other countries. Here’s an overview of the key steps:
1. Submission and Verification of Documents
Once all documents are prepared, submit them to customs for verification. This process typically takes 5–7 days.
2. Duty-Free Compliance
Your belongings must be shipped directly from Korea and arrive in Thailand within six months of your entry to qualify for duty-free exemptions. For electronics, only one of each type is allowed. Additional items will be subject to duties.
3. Delivery to Final Destination
Customs clearance is only processed in Bangkok. Afterward, items are transported to the final destination.
Direct clearance in other provinces (e.g., Phuket, Chiang Mai) is not possible, so plan accordingly.
Important Points to Note
- Timely Preparation
Delays in document preparation can impact customs clearance. In particular, failure to provide an original passport could result in unexpected costs.
- Check Prohibited and Restricted Items
Items such as paint, gasoline, fireworks, and gold bullion are prohibited. Restricted items (e.g., weapons, medications) require prior approval for import.
- Caution with New Items
New items cannot be declared as “used.” False declarations may result in high customs duties.
